War Thunder Sky Odyssey explained: Darwin Hill, permanent modes, Greek trees, MiG-35
Gaijin Entertainment shipped War Thunder’s free major content update Sky Odyssey on 16 September 2026. Softcap’s first War Thunder desk piece sticks to Confirmed primaries: the studio’s Sky Odyssey news post, the matching changelog, the mirrored Steam news item, and Gaijin’s 21 September MiG-35 launch write-up. Softcap is not inventing Battle Rating tables, unpublished win rates, or concurrent-player charts.
Primary spine: Darwin Hill for Ground Battles, three former event modes moved into the hangar as permanent submodes, a large Greek vehicle wave for Israel, headline tanks (EMBT, Arjun Mk 1, Harimau), the MiG-35 / F-102A air pair, bomber damage-model work, and half-reward abandon kills on ground and naval.

Darwin Hill and location polish
Gaijin’s Confirmed pitch for Darwin Hill: grass plains, small houses, and an airfield drawn from the real Falklands site — open sightlines with cover and defilades. Softcap is treating that as the studio’s map brief, not a Softcap terrain rating.
Same update pass also reworks Red Desert for Ground Battles and improves visual polish on the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan Air Battle maps — Softcap cites those as Confirmed location notes, not a full map-by-map changelog dump.
Permanent modes under To Battle!
Three modes that lived under Events & Tournaments move into the hangar To Battle! dropdown as always-on options:
- Nuclear Escalation
- Naval Enduring Confrontation
- Bullet Hell
Gaijin’s Confirmed framing: players could not easily find those queues before; the hangar placement is the discovery fix, and permanence is the systems change Softcap is flagging for grinders who were waiting on event calendars. A forum admin note on the news thread also confirms Nuclear Escalation can be used to grind the concurrent Space Program “Mark of Distinction for Pilots” track — Softcap is citing that as Confirmed staff clarification, not inventing event math.
Ground forces: EMBT, Arjun, Harimau, Greek armour
Confirmed ground headlines Softcap is pulling from the news post and Gaijin’s follow-up:
| Vehicle | Tree / note (Confirmed) |
|---|---|
| M7 | USA — Sherman firepower, Stuart-class armour / mobility pitch |
| EMBT | Germany + France Rank VIII — Leopard 2A7 chassis + Leclerc S2 turret; weak turret neck called out by Gaijin |
| Arjun Mk 1 | Great Britain (India) — rifled 120 mm, mobility-forward MBT |
| Harimau | Japan (Indonesia) — 105 mm Cockerill turret, DM63 APFSDS, mobility / flanking brief |
| Leopard 2HEL, Osa-AKM, Tor-M1 | Israel — Greek vehicles |
| PzH 2000 | Italy |
| FK-2000, PLZ45 (Pack) | China |
Softcap is not inventing reload timers or armour thickness beyond those Confirmed blurbs.
Air and helicopters: MiG-35, Delta Dagger, Wildcat
MiG-35 (USSR) is the modern air headline in Gaijin’s 21 September note: AESA radar, MAWS / LWS, targeting pod, up to eight R-77-1, plus Kh-38ML, Grom-2, and Kh-35U anti-ship options Softcap is citing as Confirmed loadout language.
F-102A Delta Dagger lands for the USA and as a Greek Israel variant — Confirmed as gunless, up to six AIM-4 Super Falcon missiles plus 24 unguided rockets in the bay doors. Softcap is not inventing intercept doctrine beyond that kit list.
Israel’s new Greek aviation line is the other large air sheet: SB2C-5, F-84G, F-102A, F-86E(M), A-7H / A-7E, Mirage F1CG, F-4E AUP, Mirage 2000-5EG, Rafale EG. Britain gets researchable and premium Hawk T1A packs; Japan picks up Ki-93-I Ko, Malaysian CA-27 / A-4PTM, and more. China adds J-16. Softcap is treating the full nation lists on the changelog as Confirmed inventory, not a Softcap tier list.
Helicopter Confirmed adds: Britain’s AW159 Wildcat HMA.2 (Martlet + Spike ATGMs in Gaijin’s pitch) and Germany’s H145M (Spike ER). China gets detailed cockpits for Z-9W / Z-9WA.
Missile flight-model / autopilot revisions also hit the AIM-7 family and ARH set (AIM-120 variants, R-77 / R-77-1, PL-12 / PL-12A, AAM-4, MICA-EM) — Softcap cites Gaijin’s “capabilities have increased quite significantly” line without inventing Pk tables.
Abandon kills, bomber DM, hangar UI
When a player leaves a ground vehicle or ship (ESC, or default J), Softcap’s Confirmed credit rule is:
- Kill goes to the nearest enemy, or the enemy who fired the nearest rocket / missile / bomb / torpedo / mine
- Search radius: 3 km ground · 20 km ships
- Reward: half the standard kill (same pattern as air abandon credits)
Bomber survivability gets a full damage-model pass: hit-zone recalculation, wing spars / tail / fuselage / engine settings, separate piston configs (inline vs radial, two-to-six engines) and a distinct jet-bomber logic. Softcap is not inventing “tankiness” percentages beyond that Confirmed engineering brief.
Hangar presets jump from a rank-gated max of 18 to 25 available from the start, with a left-side dropdown, horizontal scrolling, and optional gamemode / BR labels. Map markers can switch among War Thunder default, NATO, and USSR styles — previously Nuclear Escalation-only.
Naval and what Softcap is not claiming
Naval Confirmed adds include USA USS Mahan, Britain HMS Lion, USSR Strela, France Algerie / LCM(65), and Italy’s premium RN Giulio Cesare pack (ten 320 mm guns in Gaijin’s pitch). Softcap is not expanding that into a full naval meta forecast.
Client hotfixes after 16 September (including Steam-tagged 2.59.0.x strings) sit outside this explainer’s Confirmed spine — Softcap will open a new desk piece if Gaijin publishes a numbered follow-up Softcap has not covered.
