Total War: WARHAMMER III Update 9.0 explained: Neferata FLC, Archaon subjugation, Escalating Wounds
Creative Assembly shipped Update 9.0 for Total War: WARHAMMER III on Thursday 24 September 2026, paired with the paid Lords of the End Times DLC and a free Legendary Lord pack headlined by Neferata. Softcap’s explainer sticks to CA’s Update 9.0 Release Notes and the companion Free-LC | Neferata blog — Campaign AI, Slaanesh buildings, wound recovery, Archaon subjugation, Dark Fortresses, battle maps, and the Vampire Counts systems rework.
A same-day CA note (24 Sep, 14:00 BST) flags four items Thanquol “removed” from an earlier draft and then restored: the full new Dark Fortresses list, free battle maps (Middenheim, Black Pyramid, Nagashizzar), Empire Arch Lector / Warrior Priest skill-tree updates, and Tomb Scorpion moved to T2.

Softcap is not covering the full paid DLC lord kits here — those live in CA’s Meet Nagash / Glottkin / Thanquol / Boris posts. This piece is the free 9.0 + Neferata systems sheet.
Free LC: Neferata and the Vampire Counts rework
CA frames 9.0 as one of Immortal Empires’ largest free updates: major Vampire Counts rework, free Legendary Lord Neferata, End Game overhaul, Victory Conditions pass, Lores of Magic updates, and campaign intro flyby work. The Free-LC blog is the Confirmed primary for those systems; the Release Notes carry landmarks, skill trees, and RoR caps that sit beside them.
Raise Dead is now the default recruitment method for undead hordes. Units above the lowest tiers have unit capacity gated by military buildings. Lower-tier units (mostly T1–T3) spend a new provincial Corpses resource generated by kills in the province; T4–T5 also spend Blood, produced by buildings that convert Corpses. Blood also fuels confederation, critical buildings, Blood Decrees, Vampire Lairs, Bloodlines, and reworked technologies. Softcap is not inventing conversion rates CA did not publish.
Vampire Lairs replace casual Vampire Lord recruitment: find a lair (random settlements; reveal by occupation or agent actions), invest development time and choices, then awaken a customized Vampire. Bloodlines can be infinitely empowered, with each step costing more Blood. Confederation of other Vampire Count Legendary Lords now requires unique tasks plus a hefty cost.
Neferata — first Vampire, Queen of Mysteries at the Silver Pinnacle — plays a dual-lore (Vampires/Shadows) melee caster with mounts through Zombie Dragon. Campaign fantasy is Web of Power: Heroes plant Vampire Covens that generate Manipulation and track Concealment; actions steal, assassinate, disrupt, and manipulate, with higher tiers needing more Manipulation and higher Hero levels. CA lists unique items Akmet-kar, Aken-seth, and Ruby of Lahmia, plus kit abilities including Twilight’s Allure, Shadowblood, Bastet, and Hunger.
Release Notes add Neferata-facing landmarks: early Lahmian Handmaidens / Vampires at a Silver Pinnacle landmark (settlement now 10 slots), a high-tier Lahmia landmark for limited Tomb Kings recruitment, and six random Zombie Dragon landmarks for Vampire Counts and Host of Nagash (at least one guaranteed near the player start). Ulrika Magdova unlocks via Neferata’s technology tree.
Campaign AI: recruitment, elites, WoC, Archaon
CA’s problem statement: AI armies wasted turns on doomed recruitment and clumped around settlements. Published fixes:
- Per-army recruitment history so failed sites get deprioritized
- On Hard+, elite templates favour higher-quality units over raw count when budget is tight
- Warriors of Chaos: Warband upgrading scales by turn and difficulty; better tech-locked unit unlocks; clearer building priorities
- Archaon AI: expands more purposefully, fights lore-appropriate foes sooner, spends less time stuck near start
CA’s published clumping claim after these changes: stacks around a settlement should not persist more than 5–6 turns worst case, usually 2–3 while recruiting. Softcap is not inventing win-rate deltas.
Slaanesh building chains
Post–Tides of Torment feedback: Chosen arrived too early and recruitment sprawled across too many buildings. For N’Kari / The Masque, CA collapses Mounted Servants, adds Pavilion of Perfection (T4) for Chosen, and retiered Mortal Servants. Dechala gets new T3/T4 Warrior Halls buildings for Chaos Warriors and Chosen. Softcap is not reprinting every BEFORE/AFTER screenshot table — the Release Notes carry the full chains.
Wound recovery and Escalating Wounds
Wound-time reduction had become so plentiful that defeated legends could return next turn. CA cut many sources while preserving fast recovery for named cases (Morghur, Vlad). Vlad’s defeated trait no longer grants wound recovery — that power now sits on his ring instead, closing an AI exploit where anyone who beat Vlad recovered instantly thereafter.
Optional campaign setting: Escalating Wounds. Characters gain Recently Wounded after a wound; it clears after 10 consecutive turns without another wound. Getting wounded again inside that window escalates the trait through three levels, each adding future wound recovery time. Softcap is not inventing the per-level turn numbers beyond that published design — CA’s trait table images are UI stills, not a numeric sheet Softcap will invent.
End-turn performance
CA publishes up to ~30% faster campaign end turns from armoury, unit-ability looping, settlement prefab batching, VFX command rework, influence-map construction, and worker-thread granularity. That is CA’s lab claim — Softcap is not shipping independent benchmarks.
Archaon subjugation and Dark Fortresses
Archaon can subjugate Chaos Legendary Lords after beating them in battle, adding them as controllable characters. Warriors of Chaos targets confederate with settlements; mono-god targets spawn a loyal vassal culture holding their regions. If a non-subjugated Chaos LL is wiped, Archaon later gets a dilemma to fight for them. Subjugation covers WoC, Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch LLs — not Beastmen, Chaos Dwarfs, Daemons of Chaos, or Norsca. Published roster includes Kholek, Sigvald, Azazel, Festus, Valkia, Vilitch, Be’lakor, Glottkin, Skarbrand, Skulltaker, Arbaal, Ku’gath, Tamurkhan, Epidemius, N’Kari, Dechala, Masque, Kairos, and the Changeling.
Short Victory choice: continue normally, or become Lord of the End Times — irreversible — blocking further conquest for Archaon and vassals in favour of razing / Devastation bonuses.
New Dark Fortresses (full CA list): Black Crag, Black Pyramid of Nagash, Couronne, Hexoatl, Karaz-a-Karak, Khemri, Kislev, Lothern, Naggarond, Skavenblight, The Awakening, The Oak of Ages, Altar of Ultimate Darkness, Castle Carcassonne, Erengrad, Ghrond, Hag Graef, Hell Pit, Lahmia, Nagashizzar.
New free battle maps: Middenheim, Black Pyramid, Nagashizzar. Realms of Chaos maps can appear in Immortal Empires during the Chaos Invasion End Game based on corruption type and intensity.
Other systems Softcap is flagging
| System | Published change |
|---|---|
| Regiments of Renown | Default lord capacity 2; ranks unlock 3/4/5; Legendary Lords 4/6/8 — stops all-RoR AI doomstacks |
| Books of Nagash | Held by characters/settlements, stealable, denyable; multiplayer-aware |
| Daemonic Re-Emergence | Defeated daemonic factions (incl. LLs) can respawn in high-corruption provinces |
| Sigvald | Treated as Slaanesh-focused LL (tech/gifts like Azazel); loses other-god unit access |
| Skaven | Tech no longer needs building prereqs; Stormfiend love for Throt / Ikit / Skrolk |
| Empire | Arch Lector + Warrior Priest skill trees updated (24 Sep restoration note) |
| Tomb Scorpion | Moved to T2 (24 Sep restoration note) |
The Free-LC blog’s End Game overhaul (old scenarios → mid-game Crisis; three new End Games with Devastation, lighting, and music) and Victory Conditions pass are Confirmed there; Softcap is not inventing scenario win conditions beyond CA’s Chaos Invasion / other published overviews.
Why it matters
Update 9.0 is a systems day, not a single balance hotlist. Vampire Counts players get a rebuilt recruitment economy and Neferata’s Web of Power; Chaos campaigns get Archaon as a true End Times aggregator; everyone else gets AI clumping relief, optional Escalating Wounds, and CA’s published end-turn speed claim. Softcap is not inventing Immortal Empires win-rate tiers for Neferata or Archaon on day one.
What to watch next
Whether CA posts a same-week hotfix for Vampire Lair / Books of Nagash edge cases, how Escalating Wounds feels with the toggle default, and whether the restored Dark Fortress + battle-map list needs a follow-up map gallery after launch-day traffic.
