No Man’s Sky Cosmos explained: space stations, hulks, alliances, and Our Journey Continues
Hello Games shipped No Man’s Sky: Cosmos — free Update 7.0 — on 9 September 2026 across the platforms Softcap can confirm from the studio’s own posts. Softcap’s first No Man’s Sky desk piece sticks to the Cosmos update page, the 9 September launch blog, and the live Cosmos 7.04 hotfix (21 September). Softcap is not inventing expedition end clocks beyond Hello Games’ “approximately six weeks,” unpublished salvage values, or concurrent charts.
Primary spine: Station Directorship, galactic alliances, orbital construction, derelict hulks + Tractor Beam salvage, the new star system map, and Expedition Twenty-Three — Our Journey Continues, with the post-launch 7.04 sheet as the current Steam-live build Softcap can cite.

Station Directorship and alliances
Hello Games frames Cosmos as a space rebuild: prove yourself to local authorities to become director of a Space Station, then style the central lobby, add ancillary rooms, and decorate the exterior. Directors unlock monumental exterior modules (Space Anomaly Construction Research Terminal plus rare deep-space finds) and can rearrange existing station furniture with the full base-parts set.
Galactic alliances sit on top of that claim. Station directors can found an alliance with a name and banner; other Travellers join by visiting owned stations. Softcap’s read of the notes: players may join up to three alliances; leaderboards at the station core rank populous, active, and expansive collectives. Softcap is not inventing alliance caps beyond those published lines.
Derelict hulks and deep-space POIs
Cosmos fills local systems with fixed, revisitable points of interest: rocky and icy asteroid belts, inhabited and infested deep-space outposts, procedural hulks, debris fields, asteroid platforms — and a point of interest at the system’s star for anyone hubristic enough to fly there.
Shipbreaking is the risk beat. Hulks hold valuable salvage but melt down and explode if integrity drops. Softcap’s Confirmed toolkit:
- Tractor Beam — new Corvette utility part (Corvette Workshop) that pulls physical salvage into the hold
- Gravitino Coil — improved for space looting; can be equipped in Space Stations
- Automated venting on the Tractor Beam to eject cargo quickly (Hello Games’ joke caveat: not recommended on sentient objects)
Outposts trade maps and salvaged materials via a quartermaster and offer salvage/delivery contracts. Infested outposts add pathogen sacs and gelatinous fibres for Travellers willing to clear viral mass with the Coil.
Star system map and orbital homes
The star system map opens from the Quick Menu once a save has reached the Space Anomaly, marking planets, the station, and deep-space POIs with navigational assists when you mark a target. A light tutorial mission, Signals, introduces the loop.
Orbital construction lets Travellers deploy a deep-space base computer on empty volume or nest builds on natural rock platforms. New corridor parts and station decoration unlocks support freer orbital habitats. All pilots — not only Corvette captains — can now eject and spacewalk from the Quick Menu, with six-degrees-of-freedom jetpack control; spacewalking drains cold protection unless near other hazards.
Our Journey Continues — Expedition 23
Expedition Twenty-Three, Our Journey Continues, launches with Cosmos and runs for approximately six weeks. Each milestone maps to a major update or moment since the 2016 launch, with Hello Games developer notes read by Sean Murray and filed permanently in Collected Knowledge.
Published nostalgia rewards Softcap can name from the update page:
| Reward | Notes |
|---|---|
| Framed commemorative art | Book-cover images from major updates |
| Golden Rasamama S36 | Classic starter ship, golden edition |
| Starbound v0.27 Multi-Tool | From original concept art |
| Vintage Sentinel Interceptor | Rebuilt from pre-release trailer footage |
| Diplodocus companion | Pre-release creature, retextured |
| Astronaut cockpit bobblehead | Expedition collectible |
Twitch Drops for Cosmos were a separate window (10–14 September); Softcap notes that window as published history, not a live claim.
Cosmos 7.04 — what the hotfix actually fixed
Hello Games’ 21 September 7.04 post is the live Steam sheet Softcap can cite for post-launch blockers. High-signal Confirmed lines for expedition and Cosmos systems:
- Expedition progression: Multi-Tool trade before Beyond no longer soft-locks (Terrain Manipulator known by default); nanite charge removed from expedition reward ships; Voyagers / Weekend Missions / Waking Titan marker and portal fixes
- Deep-space salvage: mission collection/completion when multiple of the same type are active; rare hulk salvage spawn; salvage pull into Corvettes
- Station/claim: limit on how many space stations one player could claim; large exterior decoration collision
- Settlements: ~2 billion unit debt spike; construction terminals failing to spawn; productivity increases that decreased output
- Platforms: memory improvements for Xbox One and Switch 2
Softcap is not reprinting every audio or shader line — the Confirmed spine for players mid-expedition is the blocker list above.
Softcap take
Cosmos is not a thin cosmetics pass. Hello Games rebuilt how systems feel from the Anomaly outward: claimable stations, alliance territory, hulks that punish greed, and a 10-year expedition that still has weeks on the clock as Softcap writes. If you are mid-Our Journey Continues, install 7.04 before blaming a milestone — several Softcap-listed blockers sit on that hotfix sheet.
