Valve published Minor Update - 09-16-2026 for Deadlock on 16 September 2026 (Steam clan stamp). Softcap’s explainer sticks to Valve’s English Steam Community Announcement — the Confirmed primary for every number below.

Primary spine: comeback economy gets harder and more time-scaled; nearly every movement slow in the game drops about a fifth; item shop hits Spiritual Overflow, Decay, and Mercurial Magnum while Lifestrike, Leech, Focus Lens, and Diviner’s Kevlar move up; hero sheet nerfs Celeste and Warden hard and hands Holliday, Haze, Silver, and Shiv clearer upside.

Softcap is not inventing win-rate tiers or “dead hero” calls beyond Valve’s published deltas.

Comeback and souls

Valve’s General block opens on Unstable Rift and kill bounties — the systems that used to hand trailing teams a flat cushion.

Unstable Rift comeback resist no longer caps at a flat 35%. It now scales as 10% + 1% per minute (Valve’s example: ~20% on the first Rift), with an upper limit of 40% at 30 minutes.

Valve also removed the fixed extra bonus souls awarded for being even slightly behind in net worth on hero kill bounties and Unstable Rift bounties, and notes that change hit early-to-mid game hardest. Comeback bounties are slightly reduced on top of that.

When a player above the enemy team’s average net worth earns comeback souls, 70% of the extra comeback value now routes through the tick gold system to the lowest two players on that team — Softcap’s read of Valve’s redistribution line, not an invented fairness metric.

Objective payouts shift too:

LineChange
Guardian bounty+10%
Walker bounty+5%
Nearby heroes’ share of objective bounty30% → 25% (remainder split across all six players)

Respawn at the 20-minute mark moves 35s → 38s. Valve says late-game max respawn values are unchanged.

Underground tunnel breakables take longer to appear and reappear: initial spawn and respawn both 3m → 5m.

Global slows, parry, reload

The combat sheet Valve published is blunt:

  • All move slow values reduced by ~20% globally
  • All ground dash slows reduced by ~10% globally
  • Slows now also apply air drag equal to 35% of the slow value (toggle convar citadel_enable_slows_affect_air_drag)
  • Stuns pause reload instead of restarting it
  • Parry pauses reload; parrying during a regular dash cancels dash momentum and parries in place
  • Dashes and light melees no longer pause gun cycle time — Valve flags Silver and Abrams as the clearest winners

Softcap is not inventing air-drag feel beyond that convar line.

Items

Valve’s Items block is a shop pass Softcap is treating as Confirmed end-to-end.

Hero sheet Softcap is flagging

Valve’s hero list is long. Softcap is not reprinting every global slow cascade on Abrams Shoulder Charge or Lady Geist Malice — those track the ~20% / ~10% global pass. Below are the packages with published deltas beyond that cascade.

What this means for ranked queues

Valve’s Confirmed sheet is a comeback-economy and slow-budget scrub more than a single-hero rewrite. Trailing teams get less free net-worth padding early, Rift resist scales with clock instead of a flat 35%, and every kit that lived on heavy slows is weaker by the global ~20% / ~10% pass even before Celeste and Warden’s named cuts.

Shop side: Spiritual Overflow, Decay, and Mercurial Magnum are the clearest published downs; Diviner’s Kevlar’s new Ult CDR, Lifestrike / Leech, Focus Lens, and Shadow Weave’s Sprint Boots path are the clearest ups.

Hero side Softcap will watch on the scoreboard without inventing tiers: Celeste / Warden / Lash / Wraith take the densest named nerfs; Holliday / Haze / Silver / Shiv / Paige take the densest named buffs or reworks.
